The Opportunity

This is a newly shaped leadership role within a growing Auckland technology agency.
The business designs and builds digital platforms, mobile applications, integrations, websites and custom software for a broad range of New Zealand organisations. As the team has grown, so has the complexity of the work.
The business has now reached the point where delivery needs clearer technical ownership.

This role has been created for someone who can sit across engineering, delivery and senior leadership. Someone with enough technical depth to guide scope, challenge assumptions, support decision-making and keep projects moving with confidence.

The Development Lead will bring technical credibility, delivery structure and commercial awareness to the way work is scoped, planned and delivered.

The Company

This is a mature New Zealand technology agency with a strong track record across digital product and platform delivery.

The business has built a reputation for combining design and engineering, helping clients turn complex ideas into digital products that work well and look sharp. Its work spans custom software, web platforms, mobile applications, system integrations and digital experiences.
The team is around twenty people, with a strong technical group and established delivery capability. The culture is high trust, open and autonomous. People are expected to take ownership, solve problems and work with little unnecessary process.
The next stage is not about adding layers.
It is about putting clearer technical leadership around delivery, so decisions are made earlier, risks are visible sooner, and senior leadership has a clearer view of work, capacity and performance.

The Role

The Development Lead becomes the person responsible for how technical delivery runs day to day.
This is not a hands-on build role. You will stay close enough to the technology to challenge approach, estimates, scope and technical decisions, while spending most of your time leading delivery and supporting the people around you.
You will work across concurrent client projects, including fixed-price and time-and-materials work. That means understanding utilisation, resourcing, scope risk, delivery performance and the commercial impact of technical decisions.
You will be a key point of resolution when technical questions, scoping issues, functional design decisions or delivery risks arise. The goal is to bring clarity early, before things slow down or escalate unnecessarily.
You will also help improve reporting around utilisation, blockers, capacity, project performance and delivery risk.
The technical environment includes React, React Native and .NET. You do not need to be the strongest engineer in the room, but you do need enough depth to earn trust with experienced developers and make sound calls.

AI is also part of the future of this team. The business is already using tools such as Claude, and agent-led development is becoming part of how work gets delivered. This role will help shape how those tools are adopted in a practical way, with a focus on quality, productivity and better outcomes.

At its core, this role exists to give delivery clearer ownership, reduce unnecessary escalation, support capable people, and create more confidence across projects.

The Fit

The ideal person is a technical delivery leader who understands software teams, client delivery and the commercial realities of project work.

You may be a Development Lead, Technical Delivery Manager, Delivery Lead, Engineering Lead, Technical Project Lead or a Senior Developer who has moved into leadership.
You will be confident challenging estimates, scope and technical approach, while keeping trust with experienced developers.
You will understand how fixed-price and time-and-materials work needs to be managed, and why utilisation, resourcing and delivery risk matter.

The right person will bring structure without bureaucracy, commercial awareness without overcomplication, and a genuine interest in where software delivery is heading.
