About the role

An exciting opportunity has opened for an experienced Technical Lead – Quality Assurance (QA) to join a fast-growing global payments technology business based in North Shore, Auckland. This organisation operates within a complex engineering environment spanning cloud-native platforms, mobile payment solutions, Android-based terminal technology, and modern API-driven systems.
You’ll join a collaborative engineering environment where QA is being repositioned as an integrated engineering capability rather than a downstream testing function. The business is investing heavily in innovation, automation, AI tooling, and scalable engineering practices as they continue to grow globally.

The Opportunity

This role is far more than a traditional senior tester position. You’ll act as the QA leadership voice within engineering, partnering closely with frontend, backend, infrastructure, cloud, and platform engineering leaders to uplift testing maturity and delivery capability across the organisation.
You’ll lead a team of 5–6 Quality Assurance Engineers while remaining technically credible and hands-on enough to guide automation strategy, coaching, and engineering best practices.

Key focus areas include:

• Driving QA automation capability and strategy
• Embedding shift-left and test-driven engineering practices
• Reducing manual testing bottlenecks and improving release velocity
• Coaching engineers and QA staff on modern testing approaches
• Leading QA transformation initiatives across legacy and modern systems
• Supporting AI adoption and productivity improvements within QA
• Improving overall testing maturity across engineering teams

What You’ll Bring

• Deep automation capability with a collaborative and coaching-led leadership style.
• Proven experience leading QA or Test Engineering teams
• Strong Playwright automation experience (essential)
• Experience with mobile device and terminal testing (essential)
• Strong automation-first mindset and modern testing practices
• Experience driving QA transformation or capability uplift initiatives
• Ability to influence engineering teams and stakeholders effectively
• Experience operating within engineering-led Agile environments
• Strong mentoring and coaching capability
• Experience with API testing and modern test frameworks
• Exposure to cloud-native or AWS environments
• Technical experience across TypeScript and/or Java environments
• Modern engineering and CI/CD practices
• Android-based payment terminals and mobile devices
• Legacy SQL-based systems
