This is a senior, hands-on cloud architecture role within Virtual Eye’s Cloud Engineering function, reporting to the Cloud Team Lead and working closely alongside the Lead Cloud Architect to help design and evolve the low-level cloud architecture across a suite of cloud products (including platform services like licensing and SSO).You’ll partner closely with engineering teams and product stakeholders to translate requirements into secure, scalable and practical solutions that can be reliably built and operated. The role suits someone who enjoys balancing architecture thinking with hands-on technical contribution and real-world delivery outcomes.
The role forms part of a broader cloud and platform capability focusedon building secure, scalable, and operationally robust systems that support both internal teams and customer-facing products.
You’ll bring strong AWS cloud-native experience, a security-first mindset, and the ability to collaborate effectively with engineers while contributing to good engineering practice across the team.
Virtual Eye is open to remote-based candidates within New Zealand, with some travel required to their head office in Dunedin.

The Role:
- Support the design and evolution of architectural standards, principles and detailed cloud designs across core products
- Design and implement resilient AWS-based, cloud-native solutions
- Contribute directly to development with hands-on coding and technical problem-solving
- Collaborate with the Lead Cloud Architect and wider Cloud Engineering function to translate business and technical requirements into scalable architecture outcomes
- Champion secure engineering practices and contribute to zero-trust security initiatives
- Support monitoring, deployment patterns, incident response and scalability improvements
- Contribute to architecture and technical documentation
- Participate in continuous improvement, R&D and technology evaluation initiatives
- 5+ years in senior software engineering or cloud-focused role
- Proven AWS architecture experience (designing and implementing, not just advising)
- Strong security architecture capability (including zero-trust principles in practice)
- Hands-on software engineering capability with current coding experience
- Comfortable collaborating with engineers, architects and stakeholders across varying technical levels
