Lead DevOps Engineer
About the role
Why you’d like it
- Work at the intersection of sports, technology, and live broadcast, where your infrastructure keeps global productions running
- Own and grow a robust server cluster that underpins everything from development to release
- Build and refine CI/CD pipelines that support a wide variety of products and teams
- Collaborate across developers, 3D artists, operators, and product managers to deliver systems that work for everyone - not just engineers
- Join a Dunedin-based team trusted by the world’s biggest sports leagues
We’re looking for a hands-on DevOps Engineer to take ownership of the systems and pipelines that power ARL's diverse product suite. This is a rare “lead” DevOps role where lead means technical ownership, not people management. You’ll take accountability for the systems and pipelines that keep multiple products shipping reliably - from Unreal Engine builds through to C++ CI/CD, release automation, and baseline security checks. If you like getting close to the messy parts (build tooling, dependencies, runners, networking, hybrid infra) and leaving things simpler than you found them, you’ll have real influence here.
The Role
- Own and evolve Unreal Engine build + deployment pipelines (incl. custom builds and multi-version support)
- Design and improve CI/CD for C++ projects with shared dependencies
- Help drive a transition towards vcpkg and CMake where appropriate
- Build and maintain GitLab CI/CD workflows for QA, staging and production releases
- Embed baseline security checks (vuln scanning, secret detection, build hygiene)
- Maintain and improve a Proxmox-based DevOps cluster (Windows + Linux), including NVIDIA vGPU drivers
- Partner with systems to plan disaster recovery and improve resilience (incl. cloud CI/CD options)
Your Fit - Core Skills
- Strong background in platform, systems, or software engineering
- Proven experience building and running CI/CD (GitLab ideally)
- Confident across Linux and Windows administration
- Hands on experience of build systems, automation and dependency management
- Comfortable debugging across code, build tooling, infrastructure and runtime
- Good networking fundamentals and clear communication
Bonus skills (or areas to grow into)
- Experience with Unreal Engine build pipelines
- Strong C++ build system knowledge (CMake, vcpkg, compiler toolchains)
- Experience managing Proxmox or similar virtualisation platforms
- Familiarity with GPU-backed compute environments
- Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS in particular)
- Automation and tooling development (Python, Bash, PowerShell)
