About the role

The Opportunity: Join a global security and building control innovator at a pivotal time. This organisation is reimagining the software that powers its embedded control systems – moving from bolted-together legacy to modern, scalable platforms. This is your chance to lead that change.

As Embedded Tech Lead, you’ll lead the technical and cultural evolution of a core team developing a Linux-based control plane: an edge platform that orchestrates smart locks, video, sensors, and building systems globally. You’ll help architect a flexible, extensible embedded platform and bring best practice delivery to life – enabling CI/CD, planning, and cross-functional collaboration.

This is a hands-on leadership role, ideal for someone who enjoys balancing technical depth, delivery, and people growth.

Company Profile:

This forward-thinking company is an international leader in on-site and remote security, building management, and control systems. Its hardware products integrate seamlessly with sensors and machine vision, playing a critical role in a connected ecosystem that delivers intuitive, data-driven building experiences. With deep expertise in embedded systems and IoT and Cloud connectivity, the business delivers reliable, scalable solutions trusted by tens of thousands of companies worldwide. As it continues to grow, the company is focused on evolving its hardware portfolio - streamlining production, enabling offshore manufacturing, and optimising for performance and simplicity. The next phase of its growth centres on building smarter, leaner hardware to support an expanding SaaS software and Cloud platform capability.

The Role:

As Embedded Tech Lead, you will own the performance, direction, and day-to-day leadership of the embedded software team. You’ll lead platform strategy and delivery execution while supporting the growth of a collaborative, forward-looking engineering culture.

You will drive:

Platform Architecture: Shape the design of a Linux-based edge controller that runs modular applications for access control, video, and sensor integration. Champion C++ development standards and pragmatic security.

Modernisation: Lead the evolution of the embedded platform – moving from legacy, bolted-together code to a scalable, testable architecture. Reuse IP where it makes sense, rebuild where needed.

Delivery Discipline: Improve planning and release rhythms. Support CI/CD for embedded Linux. Guide the team through sprint planning, backlog grooming, and efficient cross-functional execution.

Cultural Shift: Drive a culture of openness, inclusion, and feedback. Help the team move away from siloed thinking to empowered, collaborative problem-solving.

Technical Oversight: Remain close to the work (~20% hands-on). Understand the code, unblock problems, and ensure standards are met. Not the reviewer of every PR, but the leader setting the bar.

People Leadership: Manage a small team (approx. 3–4 direct reports) of senior and principal engineers. Coach them through growth plans, performance conversations, and technical decision-making.

Your Fit:

We’re looking for a delivery-minded embedded leader with depth in C++ and a clear head for scalable system design. You’ve been through modernisation before, and you understand what it takes to shift both code and culture.

You’ll bring deep experience in embedded software development, specifically working with C++ on Linux-based platforms. You’ve delivered complex products that operate in hybrid environments – combining on-premise devices with cloud-connected infrastructure – and you understand the nuances of building secure, scalable software at the edge.

Your background may include IoT, building systems, or other physical-digital platforms where reliability and system integration are key.

You’re confident leading agile delivery in embedded contexts, with a strong handle on planning, estimating, and continuous improvement. You’ve led teams before, coaching senior engineers and helping shift culture through clear communication, inclusion, and practical leadership. You know how to set standards, unblock delivery, and bring people on the journey.

Familiarity with access control, building informatics, or security systems is a bonus – but what matters most is your ability to lead in technical, delivery, and cultural domains at once.

You’re not looking for a status-quo engineering team – you want to lead something that’s evolving. You thrive in environments where legacy meets opportunity and are excited by the mix of technical depth and leadership scope.

If you’re ready to lead the future of embedded control systems in a company that’s innovating at scale, we’d love to hear from you.

Please note: Only applications from job seekers who hold a valid work visa, permanent residency, or NZ citizenship and are currently based in New Zealand will be considered.
