Reporting to the CTO, you will be a strategic leader shaping MTF's technical vision, solution architecture, and engineering practices, joining the organisation amidst an exciting time of transformation. Leading MTF’s growing software dvelopment team, you will collaborate closely with the Technology and Product teams to drive the delivery of high-quality, market leading solutions.
The Role:
As the Head of Software Development, this role will be instrumental in driving the company’s digital transformation, enhancing its product offerings, and ensuring the business remains at the forefront of financial technology. You will be leading a small but growing team and managing key relationships across MTF, including with National Office colleagues, originators, shareholders, advisors, suppliers, and consultants. As a senior leader of the technology team, this role contributes to the MTF wider leadership forum. You will be involved in defining the application architecture roadmap, improving software development practices, ensuring high-quality, resilient solutions, and overseeing legacy system support alongside the Technology Operations and Data & Analytics teams. The role involves leading the Software Development team, focusing on recruitment, development, retention, performance management, and promoting a culture of quality and innovation.
About You:
You will be a dynamic leader, skilled in building high-performing software teams and promoting collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning. You will excel in connecting the organisation’s strategic goals and the needs of its’ users, with the engineering practices and ways of working which can efficiently deliver to those needs over the long term. With an analytical, solution-oriented approach, you will align software development with both short-term goals and long-term technological growth, playing a key role in shaping MTF’s future technology landscape. This role requires someone to preferably be based from Dunedin, however we are open to Auckland for the right person who can committ to travelling regularly.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Strategy and Solution Architecture:
- Accountable for the definition and ongoing evolution of the organisation's application architectural roadmap.
- Accountable for embedding and continuously improving MTF’s software development methodologies, this role will ensure a continuing uplift in delivery practices.
- This role will be instrumental in leading a passion for quality and accountability within team culture. It is accountable for the delivery of high quality, operationally resilient solutions within agreed parameters.
- Whilst MTF’s legacy operating system is under a permanent change freeze, it will continue to be operationally critical for some time to come. This role will work alongside the Technology Operations and Data & Analytics teams to maintain this.
- As an effective, highly engaged, and contributing leader, this role oversees the performance and delivery of the Software Development team. This extends across the whole employee life cycle.
Essential Attributes and Capabilities:
- 3+ years of leadership experience in line managing team, including growing, motivating, and retaining high-performing software development teams.
- Deep understanding of modern software development practices.
- Strong background in cloud-native architecture and microservices design.
- Excellent communication skills and problem-solving aptitude.
- Proven experience delivering at scale on cloud platforms, preferably in Microsoft Azure.
